![]() When the media is imported, Plex will try its best to grab the metadata, the information about the content such as genre, IMDB data, actor details etc. When ready click on “Add Library” to import the media.ĭepending on the amount of media that you have to import this process may take minutes or hours, so please be patient and wait for the process to finish. Now which library you add depends on what you have. You will be prompted to add a library, so go ahead and do so. So now that we our drive ready to serve our media, let's start using it!īack to our laptop/PC and open your web browser to your Plex Media Server. Now this might take some time so be patient. Our next goal is to install the software necessary for our Pi.įirst we update our list of available software. It may seem a little scary at first but the terminal is the best way to work with a Linux computer. With our Pi rebooted we now find ourselves at the terminal. You will be asked to reboot, do so before progressing. With these changes made, save and exit the application. We’ll also change the memory for the GPU to only use 16MB of RAM, and overclock the Pi 2 to 1GHz. In this application we need to change the boot behaviour so that the Pi boots to the terminal and is logged in. From there select the Raspberry Pi Configuration application. When your Pi has booted to the desktop, click on the menu to the top left of the screen and go to the Preferences menu. Lastly attach the power cable to boot the Pi. Insert the microSD into the Raspberry Pi, then attach any peripherals such as keyboard, mouse, HDMI, Ethernet to the Pi. With Raspbian installed we now need to boot our Raspberry Pi. The best tutorial on how to do this is provided by the Raspberry Pi Foundation and can be found on their blog We start the project by installing the latest version of Raspbian on to an 8GB or greater SD card. An Ethernet cable connected to a router. If you fancy opera in the kitchen, jazz in the bathroom and the latest Hollywood blockbuster in your pocket, then you need a media server and the Raspberry Pi 2 is the ideal low cost candidate. ![]() Plex now is 80% “why is my movie stuttering” (because you’re transcoding but don’t even know what that means) and 20% “hey guys, Plex now offers cooking recipes!” (“and to enhance the cooking experience, were abandoning all clients and writing new ones!”).With our ever increasing media libraries containing movies, TV shows, music and pictures we need something that can serve this content to any of our devices. Plex (OSXBMC) was a perfectly good home theater player back in the day, and the more they messed with it, the more broken it became for that same, traditional use and the more useless it became to me who didn’t need any of the new stuff. I don’t want anything else, I personally don’t even need the remote streaming part. I appreciate what Plex tries to do, but the same complaint I’ve had for the past decade is still as true now as it was then: they should focus on perfecting media playback on one family of clients. I got a Shield, but Plex was being wonky there too, so I ended up running Kodi for the last few years. Plex abandoning first PHT and then PMP on Mac is what made me get a dedicated box instead. Feel free to lead me to it if that is the case.Įxactly. If its a question of larger UI, I can just increase the zoom in FireFox/Chrome. It does everything worse than the web interface in terms of navigation. At the end of the day here is a useable app that I am sure some good folks sunk a fair amount of work into. I'm stuck with TAB and the arrow keys like I'm navigating a text editor in DOS. I can't middle click to place a marker on the screen to use as a manipulation point to navigate. I can't use the tilt wheel to scroll side to side. To be clear within Plex HTPC I can move a cursor and click on things, but I can't use the scroll wheel to interact with a menu. There are remotes on the market as well with gyros installed that work like LG's air mouse within Windows 10. Using an HTPC I have the option of pretty compact Logitech boards with trackpads that I can easily keep by the couch. Not sure I get what is this app is trying to do? What does this improve? First impression is its not as good as just using my web browser or playing files locally via another app I'm also using that gives me native Xbox controller support. If there is a way to change that I haven't yet figured that out. ![]() It doesn't do proper mouse support or work at the native resolution of my display.
